2018 USA-Kansas Outstanding Service Award
USA-Kansas is pleased to announce the 2018 USA-Kansas Outstanding Service Award recipient, Dr. George Abel, Assistant Superintendent at Emporia USD 253.
In 1985 USA-Kansas began recognizing one USA-Kansas member with the Outstanding Service Award. This award is designed to recognize an individual who has provided exceptional contributions to the profession and their organization and exhibits exemplary leadership to education in Kansas.
George Abel has deep roots in Kansas education, he has spent his career educating students, teachers, and administrators, while promoting the education profession. He has been a member of USA-Kansas for the last 25 years and a patriarch for the Kansas Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development (KASCD).
Following the completion of his Bachelor’s degree at the Kansas State Teacher’s College, he began his teaching career in Emporia in 1973 George moved back home to his Alma Mater in Eudora where he worked 10 years. He made one more stop in Gardner before returning to Emporia for the next 25 years of his education career. While at Emporia, Eudora, and Gardner, George taught science, served as a school counselor, and could be found coaching wrestling and football.
When he returned to Emporia in 1993, Dr. Abel started as the Director of Secondary Education. A few years later his title was changed to Director of Teaching and Learning and eventually he moved to the position of Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning. When George retires in a few weeks he will complete an outstanding 45-year career in education - he will step away from the very same role he started 25 years earlier, but most would imagine the job expectation and training might look a little different today compared to when he started his role 25 years prior.
George completed his Master’s degree at Emporia State University and his doctoral work at the University of Kansas. On behalf of USA-Kansas and KASCD we would like to say Thank You to Dr. George Abel for his leadership, dedication, and commitment to education.
