Anative of Wichita, Kansas, Lauren Werhan became Miss Kansas 2010 on June 12 in Pratt Kansas. She is the daughter of Rodney and Linda Werhan and is one of four children. Prior to winning the Miss Kansas title, Werhan was a student at Wichita State University working towards a degree in Strategic Communications. As Miss Kansas 2010, Lauren has partnered with "Do The Deed and Volunteer Kansas" to promote her platform of “Do the Deed: Deeds of Service.” During her year of service as Miss Kansas, Lauren hopes to take this platform across the state, encouraging individuals everywhere to find ways to volunteer in their own communities. The Miss America Organization is the world’s largest scholarship program for young women and one of the nation’s leading achievement programs. More than $200 million in cash scholarships have been made available since the scholarship program began, with over $45 million made available annually. The Miss America Organization provides young women an opportunity to further their personal and professional goals and instill a spirit of community service through a variety of unique nationwide community based programs.
The first step is to compete in (and win) either a Local Pageant or Festival. Local Pageants and Festivals are held throughout Kansas from July through March annually. Local Pageants are an integral part of the Miss Kansas system and are conducted using official Miss America rules. For a list of all Local Pageants and Festivals, please visit our Local Pageants Directory and contact the Local Director listed for the local pageant you wish to enter. The director will provide specific information about entry deadlines and competition requirements.


SB 350, the Democrat's plan to restore funding to the BSAPP over several years, is now is now available online. Click here to download the bill.

KSDE has provided a run, SF12-051 (January 10, 2012), which provides the effects of a proposed school finance plan being offered by Democratic leaders in the Kansas Legislature. The plan provides for an increase in BSAPP for the 2012-13 school year of $66.75; in the 2013-14 school year an additional $66.75 and in the 2014-15 school year an additional $133.50 (based upon 50 percent of the state general fund increase.) Beginning with the 2014-15 school year, this plan will provide general state aid based upon 50 percent of the state general fund increase (excluding KPERS).

Governor Brownback's Excellence in Education Act is now available online. While some part of the plan looked familiar, the bill included many other provisions that are still being reviewed. The bill is 138 pages long. Click here to download the bill.

KSDE has updated the Governor’s school finance reform plan based upon information available at this time (January 24, 2012). It is important to note that this plan would not take effect until the 2013-14 school year. Click here to download SF12-066.
