Topeka – Sabetha Superintendent Dennis Stones has been named the 2010 Outstanding Service Award recipient by United School Administrators of Kansas (USA|Kansas). Stones was recognized by the association and colleagues during the USA|Kansas annual convention in Wichita last week.
Each year, USA|Kansas bestows upon one of its administrators the Outstanding Service Award – the highest honor the organization awards. This individual is nominated by the presidents of each of the 10 statewide member associations and is recognized for outstanding contributions to the profession and for exemplary leadership.
Stones’ story is one of lifelong dedication to education and students. He is a native of Sabetha and has spent most of his professional career in Kansas. For Stones is now in his eleventh year as the superintendent of Sabetha public schools, having previously served as assistant superintendent and principal of Sabetha High School. His educational leadership also includes serving as a high school principal in Madison, Kansas for two years; 7-12 principal in Kremlin, Oklahoma; and a teacher and coach in Nebraska.
Stones is a member of USA|Kansas, the Kansas Association of School Administrators and the American Association of School Administrators. He served as president of USA|Kansas and is currently serving as a member of the School Finance Task Force. He represents USA|Kansas on the KanEd Advisory Board and on the Kansas Educational Leadership Commission design teams. Stones is an executive board member for the Wolf River School to Work Consortium and is chair of the Northeast Kansas Distant Learning Consortium.
Earlier this year, Stones was named one of five finalists for the Kansas Superintendent of the Year program. He was also the recipient of the Kansas Association of School Administrators’ Distinguished Service Award.
In addition to his educational leadership in Sabetha, Stones is actively engaged in professional activities and community organizations. He is a member of the Sabetha Chamber of Commerce and the American Business Clubs. Stones also served on the Sabetha Community Housing Committee.
“Without question, Dennis has truly embraced the word “service” and leadership during his career in education,” says Cheryl Semmel, executive director of USA|Kansas. “But more notably, Dennis is a passionate advocate for students – not only in Sabetha, but throughout Kansas.“
